Which ring is the ring finger?

Egypt is the place where wedding bands emerged 4,800 years ago and still stand for unending love down the line. In representing the infinite, rings symbolize the couples eternal love.

You place your wedding ring on the ring finger first because it is the first piece of the set, and then put on the engagement ring afterward. That’s why these two rings are often purchased, or designed, with one another in mind.

Wedding bands and rings are only worn by men after marriage. It is a practice for many people to wear a wedding ring on your left hand. Most of us are right handed so we’ll be less likely to damage the ring as we go about our daily lives.

Traditional Ring Finger Meaning

A romantic tradition: the wearing of an engagement and/or wedding ring on the fourth finger of the left hand—and it’s totally untrue. The Vena Amoris, or 'Vein of Love,' is a belief held by ancient Romans that this finger's vein runs directly to the heart, says Kristen Lawler-Trustey, a spokeswoman for jewelry brand Forevermark. So it’s only natural, then, that those in love should display the symbol of their love and devotion on their lifeline.

Anyways, What Exactly Does Engagement Really Mean?

The term of engagement is a formal promise to marry someone across the world. The ring itself is the getting married agreement symbolized by the signature at the bottom of a contract. Wedding rings have been in tradition for almost five thousand years as opposed to the engagement ring – which came a long time later.

Diamond engagement ring is a manifestation—a promise, if you will, of sorts, that is an end to enduring love between the two people. Traditionally it is the women who wear the engagement ring as a symbol of a man's love, but it is not against tradition to wear an engagement ring as a man.

Cultural Differences

The western custom of wearing wedding rings on the left hand is traditional, which has been worn from time immemorial. Common for countries like the UK, US, France, Portugal, Switzerland and Australia, and also for Canada.

It is an established tradition from the 11th century. On their left hand, in medieval Europe Christian betrothal ceremonies, men blessed the ring and placed the ring on the tip of their wives’ fingers, beginning from their thumb, the last of which was their fourth finger where they would leave it staying.

There weren’t any wedding rings the men didn’t wear in the past, these were for the women. Until the 20th century, only Asians women did wear wedding rings in the UK. Yet this was not the case, as the First and Second World Wars started men started wearing wedding rings to keep them away from their wives whilst they were fighting.

Within Western culture though, we do have several countries that put their wedding rings on their right hand.

How big is my ring finger anyways?

So much goes into the size of a ring finger that's a surprising thing. You will also have to look beyond your finger’s shape and size, and take into account how you live your life, and what ring you’re looking to buy. Finally there’s climate too, hands and fingers will likely be more likely to swell in the summer and less likely to swell in the winter because of the cold. In addition, the band’s width will affect sizing, as a thicker band will be a tighter fit.

The best time to measure is when your body is at its most normal, which is when it isn't very hot and you can do it at room temperature during the middle of the day, not immediately after you've worked up a sweat, or straight out of a hot meal. If the fingers run a little small or a little large at times, ring guards or beads may help offset the slight fluctuations. If you are not sure of your ring size, go ahead and get professionally measured.

Conclusion

A silly question for sure for some, but for me it is important to know what ring finger is that, and why so? The last thing you want to do though is fumble at the altar trying to remember which finger you need to put the ring on as if we are on the verge of tying the knot.
