Gold Quality Marks 

Karat, Carat, Karat, Carat, Kt., Ct., K, CA 10 karat gold item would be 10/24ths gold and a 12K item (12K is another name for 12 karats) contains 12/24ths gold, etc. Karats may also be expressed in decimal form, such as “.416 fine gold” (10K).ad these stamps and hallmarks ensure you are investing in a piece that aligns with your desire for quality, and can be passed down to enrich your family legacy.

The karat gold that you get in the market needs to be at least 9 karats.

Carats (ct.) are a unit of gemstone mass which have nothing to do with karats, a way of describing the color of gold and platinum. A carat is 0.2 grams (1/5 of a gram, 0.0007 ounce). A point is one hundredth of a carat. 

Gold Filled, Rolled Gold Plate 

Gold-filled is the quality mark of an article made of base metal to which at least 10 karat gold sheet has been bonded. High karat gold (56, 58, or 60 karat) reference is not permitted except in the case of optical frames, watch cases, hollowware (such as decanters) and flatware (such as knives, forks). Also, the weight of the gold sheet is at least 1/20th the weight of the item.

The quality mark may comprise the ratio to the total weight of the article of the weight of the gold in the article and a statement on the quality of the gold expressed in karats or decimals. For example, a mark of "1/20 10K G.F." means that it is a gold-filled article, 1/20th the weight consisted of 10 karat gold.

However, the gold sheet used in rolled gold may be of less than 1/20th the weight of the article and both rolled gold plate and gold filled can use the same manufacturing process. It must still be at least a 10 karat gold sheet at least. The quality mark used for rolled gold plate articles, like all gold filled articles, may be a weight ratio of the article (1/40 10K R.G.P.) and the statement of quality. 

Gold and Silver Plate 

gold electroplate, gold-plated G.E.P., electro plaqué d'or or or plaqué, silver electroplate, silver plate, silver-plated, electroplaqué d'argent, plaqué d'argent, or the respective abbreviations of these terms. That which is marked with the gold plating quality means that an article has been electroplated with gold of at least 10 karats. Quality marks for silver-plating indicate where as a standard minimum an article has been electroplated with silver of at least 92.5% purity. Silver plated and gold plated articles do not require minimum thickness.

Silver Quality Marks 

Abbreviations of these terms, silver, sterling, sterling silver, argent argent sterling, silver,argent sterling, explanations of the indications on a sterling silver jewelry item such as 925, 92.5, .925. Articles containing a minimum of 92.5% pure may carry quality marks or a decimal figure.  The latter include some metallic things which are not silver , and these may be so called. It is well known ( for example, nickel silver has 60 per cent copper, 20 per cent nickel, 20 percent zinc and, sometimes, five per cent tin. In German/nickel/alpaca silver or Tibetan silver there is not a single silver besides alpaca silver.

Vermeil 

Vermeil also has quality marks used on those articles of silver, not less than 92.5 percent and plated with gold not less than 10 karats. The gold plated portion may have no minimum thickness.

Platinum and Palladium Quality Marks  

Quality marks were given for platinum for articles that were made up of at least 95% platinum, 95% platinum and iridium or 95% platinum and ruthenium. 

Reading Stamps and Hallmarks

These markings are often read with a magnifying glass and oftentimes patience. Usually found inside rings, the clasps of necklaces and pendants, or the backs of earrings, these guys are typically close enough to the body to keep you comfy. Find the numbers for purity of metal, then search for trademarks, or any special symbols, which may disclose part of the piece’s history or origin.
