The weight of a diamond is called Carat. Weighed in carats, diamonds are sold but are mistaken for a measure of diamond size. Therefore, it is not always that a 0.96 carat diamond is always smaller than a1.00 carat diamond. Understanding the diamond size is to look at ‘mm’ measurements of a diamond. Additionally, the price of diamonds tends to increase exponentially by weight. Therefore, a diamond of 2 carats will cost much more than the double of price of a diamond of 1 carat. There is no relation between Carat and the equally sounding 'Karat' which is the term for measuring gold purity.

• One carat is equivalent to 1/200th of one gram.

• 1 carat = 100 cents

• Therefore 0.10 carat is also called 10 cents.

Something else to know: An increase in carat weight does not mean that the diamond's size increases as much. With this said, a 2 carat diamond is far smaller than twice the amount of a 1 carat diamond (see diamond carat-size charts below for reference).

Round Diamond Carat Size Chart

Below chart represents diameters in mm/millimeter for different round diamonds carat weight. It gives you a good idea of how large the diamond will be, however, none of the diamonds with 0.20 carats will all be 3.90 mm diameter. 

The possible 0.18 carat round diamond also has a 3.80 mm diameter and the possible 0.22 carat round diamond also has a 3.80 mm diameter. That is because diamonds can be cut in different ways. The below diameters are just an indicative measure for different carat weights of a round diamond with 'Excellent' cut grading.

Why is the Millimeter Measurement of Diamond Important?

What is a millimeter measurement of a diamond? That’s because the same carat weight can look larger (but still the same measurement) if the diamond is fashioned differently, with different facets. If you're looking for a diamond that looks larger faceup, consider getting a fancy shape diamond: Round fashioned shapes are often smaller than other shapes such as emerald, oval and pear.

After that, when you are buying a diamond for an existing ring setting, then you want the millimeter measurements. It doesn’t mean that the diamond has to be a definite millimeter size depending upon the style of the setting.

When buying non round diamond shapes like cushion and emerald, millimeter measurements are also worth considering. The millimeter measurements also tell you if the cushion diamond is squarish, and emerald diamonds will be more rectangular.
